TALES OF ANCIENT STONES AND BRAND-NEW EXPERIENCES

Andrea Bradatsch, 6B 2000/01

Being asked about our language trip to Oxford (which took place from 23 March to 6 April 2001), the first two things that come to my mind are all the old buildings and the whole experience itself. Being in a country where people talk a different language and even have a completely different opinion of what life should be like can make you aware of a lot of things in your own environment that you haven’t noticed before.

If you haven’t already been to England, you somehow go there with a not wrong but slightly twisted opinion. You expect everything to be quite the same as it is at home, only with a bit of this typical British touch known from films and novels. However, you quickly find out that the meaning of “typically British“ must have changed in the meantime. I thought I would meet nice, tea-drinking people, but our host-family was more like a modern family instead, regarding their eating habits.

Another thing I found a little bit confusing at first was the British public transport system. Not only the driving on the left side, but the fact that you have to get on the bus through the front door and have to pay for the exact route you want to go. There is no sneaking in like in Austria and I found that amazing.

What I also found a little bit shocking was the way people were dressed. “Aren’t they freezing to death?“ , I wondered at first, but suddenly I realised that I just didn’t care anymore whether there was some rain or cold wind.

The language school somehow reminded me of our English elective course at school, because we focused on current topics and practised our oral English a lot.

I was quite impressed by the facts we heard about the Oxford colleges, because they seem to be a world of their own and can’t be compared to any other schools or universities I have heard of. I also loved the atmosphere in the inner city, because it reminded me of Graz, although the stores are open until late in the evening.

One of the funniest locations in Oxford is the part of the city where ‘our’ language school is situated, because there is one language academy after the other, and from the outside they all look alike.

So all in all I can say that this trip has been one of the richest experiences in my life so far and I will keep a lot of memories about it in my mind. It was great.
